All about composting for your backyard garden & your health.

 

What is composting?

Process whereby organic wastes, including food wastes, paper and yard wastes, decompose naturally resulting in a product rich in minerals and ideal for gardening and farming as a soil conditioner, mulch, resurfacing material or landfill cover.

What will I learn?

  • How to make your own backyard compost to feed your garden soil.
  • How to brew your own horticultural compost tea. Prevent disease and pests on both outdoor and indoor plants.
  • What goes and doesn't go into the compost bin (ins/outs)?
  • How do I make a compost bin?
  • How to build the best soil using compost
  • How do I prevent unwanteds (bugs & rodents) from getting into the bin?
  • What is plant health care?
  • How to build and utilize raised bed gardens.  It’s not too late to grow your own summer        and fall vegetables!
  • What is a raised garden? A raised garden is a garden using

           compost as the only soil amendment.

About the Instructor

Michael Snow is farm manager of the Ecosystem Farm at the Accokeek Foundation in Accokeek, Md. He has grown vegetables in Vermont and California, on farms ranging in size of less than an acre to 50 acres, building compost piles out of all sorts of materials (manure, grass clippings, leaves, kitchen scraps and deer guts!).

Cancellation Policy and Refund/Credits:

  • All cancellations for a refund (minus 4.75% processing fee) or credit towards a future class must be made at least 7 days prior to the class date.
  • You may re-schedule based on availability.
  • No refund/credit will be issued if you cancel a class you have re-scheduled.
