Introduction to Deconstruction & Building Material Reuse
Attention:
Architects Builders Contractors Homeowners
What is building material reuse?
Building material reuse is a second life for used and unwanted building
materials that might otherwise be disposed of - saving production energy, reducing the demand for
virgin materials extraction, and reducing waste.
What is deconstruction?
The disassembly of existing structures in order to reuse or recycle as much
of the building material and equipment as possible.
The seminar will answer these questions:
Building Material Reuse
- What is a building material reuse center & what will you find at
The Loading Dock, Inc.?
- Where else (other than deconstruction projects) do "still useable"
materials come from?
- What are the pros and cons of using new and used surplus building
products?
- Who typically benefits from reuse centers?
- How does The Loading Dock, Inc. function and what else does it do?
- What does Community Forklift, LLC do?
- What are the differences are between Habitat for Humanity ReStores,
The Loading Dock, and Community Forklift?
- Why one might shop at Re-use facilities instead of Freecycle, Craig's
List, Auctions, or E-bay.
- What the constraints on building material re-use can be.
- Why using re-used building materials can be environmentally superior
to using virgin green building products.
- Why the American marketplace generally discourages re-use.
- How re-use and re-manufacturing can create more jobs than business
as usual.
- How reuse contributes to community sustainability.
- Why of all consumer products, building materials should especially
be re-used .
Deconstruction
- What is deconstruction? What takes place during the process?
- What are the benefits of deconstruction vs. traditional demolition?
- How much will it cost compared to traditional demolition?
- How long will it take -- will it delay start of construction?
- Are there potential tax benefits associated with deconstruction?
- Is deconstruction appropriate for major renovation projects as well
as whole-house removal?
- Where are reclaimed items and recycled building materials taken?
- How much is deconstruction able to salvage for re-use or recycling?
